“One more, let’s go.” My trainer’s blasting me today but it’s my first day back training with the team instead of our solo sessions and I’m not about to let him down. Two weeks ago I was cleared to train and was told as long as I can get my arm back to those high speeds I was throwing before, that I’ll be back in the game in a few weeks.
So much for the six weeks max that they told me initially, but at least there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. I just have to make it back before the season ends and I don’t have much time to do that.
“Hey man,” my teammate Matt says, tossing his towel down on the bench next to me. I’ve got one more rep of twenty to go before they’ll let me go for the day and I’m not in the mood to stand around and kill time. Tonight’s date number three with Blake and I can’t be late.
Dates one and two went well. They didn’t end where I wanted them to but she’s starting to smile more. She’s letting her guard down around me, which is always a good sign. I’m sure she’s nervous because of who I am, but I think I’m doing a damn good job of showing her I’m not the guy she thinks I am. I’m not a player. I’m not a douche.
I’m a nice guy.
And being a nice guy better fucking pay off soon. She kisses like sin and her body is begging for me to be inside her but for some reason she’s not letting that happen yet.
I’ll break her.
“What’s up?” I grab the weights to start into my last set.
“How’s the arm feeling?”
I look at Matt, pausing my set long enough to make sure he knows he’s interrupting me. Matt’s nice. He wasn’t one of the ones to welcome me to the team when I signed on earlier this season and he’s not been an overly enthusiastic teammate to be around, but he’s alright. I don’t really have any beef with him. Damien does, but that’s his own deal. Matt's a hell of a first baseman and without him I wouldn't have as many wins as I do.
“Feeling good.” I huff and start lifting again.
“Hey uh,” he mumbles something and rubs the back of his neck. “Look, the team and I were talking, and we all feel like shit that none of us were really around for your recovery.”
“Don’t worry about it.” I do another round, feeling the sheen of sweat starting to bead on my forehead. This shouldn’t be this hard. Months ago this wasn’t this hard.
Fuck Mendoza.
“Hey we’re all going out tonight to celebrate Nathan’s birthday. You want to join?”
I look at him again and furrow my brows. No. I don’t.
“I’m good, I have plans already.” I huff, setting the weights down.
“Next time, then.” He nods slowly then pats me on the shoulder and walks back out the doors he just came in.
